SphinxConnect Fellowships

To reduce barriers to participation, SphinxConnect Fellowships are offered to provide housing and/or transportation assistance to attend the convening. Fellowships are intended to support attendees who would not otherwise be able to attend the convening.

Single Fellowships

Single Fellowships are for individuals interested in attending SphinxConnect on their own. Upon submission of an application, they may be considered for the following:

• A single room at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center (convening hotel) for three nights.

• Check-in: Thursday, January 25 on/after 4:00 pm ET

• Check-out: Sunday, January 28 by 11:00 am ET

• A $450 travel stipend to help offset travel costs, including ground transportation.

Group Fellowships

Group Fellowships are designed for groups of up to four (4) people who are interested in sharing a room at the convening hotel. Each group member MUST submit an application and will be considered for the following:

• A room with two queen beds at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center (convening hotel) for three nights.

• Check-in: Thursday, January 25, on/after 4:00 pm ET

• Check-out: Sunday, January 28, by 11:00 am ET

• A $450 travel stipend per group member to help offset travel costs, including ground transportation.

All Fellowship recipients must complete the below requirements as part of their experience at SphinxConnect.

• Attend the Opening Plenary at 7:30 pm ET on Thursday evening, January 25th.

• Attend the Closing Plenary at 4:20 pm ET on Saturday afternoon, January 27th.

• Attend the Sphinx Competition Finals Concert on Saturday evening, January 27th.

  • Your conference badge will serve as your ticket.

  • Ground transportation to and from the concert hall will be provided.

• Complete two surveys following the convening:

  Fellowship Impact Statement
  Due by 5:00 pm ET on Friday, February 2nd.

  SphinxConnect Closing Survey
  Due by 5:00 pm ET on Wednesday, March 1st

Fellows who do not complete these requirements may be asked to return any travel funds sent to them and/or prohibited from applying for future Fellowship application cycles.

Who is eligible to apply for a Fellowship?

Everyone!

What happens if I’m not awarded a Fellowship?

You will be automatically placed on a waitlist in case someone declines or drops out. If you are considered to move off of the waitlist, a member of the Sphinx team will notify you via email.

What happens if I AM awarded a Fellowship?

You will be notified via email and sent an agreement outlining the terms of the Fellowship with a deadline to sign, including expectations and deliverables. If awarded a travel stipend, information about how to receive those funds will be included in the agreement.

You are strongly advised to ensure you can receive emails from Jake@SphinxMusic.org so that you do not miss any notifications about an award. If you miss the deadline to sign the agreement, Sphinx will assume you are no longer interested and extend the Fellowship offer to someone on the waitlist.

If I’m awarded housing support, who will book my room?

If you are awarded housing support, Sphinx will book your room for you in late December or early January. Email notifications regarding your room reservation will come directly from the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center.
